OSU Social Work Intern
I am very excited about my internship this week because we are having a volunteer appreciation potluck. Volunteers are very important to SON Ministries because without them we would not be able to function. We have many volunteers that serve many different roles at SON. Some of the volunteers help with the adult English classes, some work with the youth in academic support. This potluck is very special to SON because it allows all the staff, volunteers and families that utilize this program to bring a dish from their culture. It is really nice to visit with the families in a festive, social setting. I like to to sit at the tables and eat with the families and ask them about the different foods they brought. It is always nice to see how the children interact with their parents and siblings when they are all together.Speaking with the parents helps me get a better understanding of why this program is so beneficial to them. The potluck is also a time where the parents of the children that attend Kids Club can see the crafts that the children have been working on. i know this offers reassurance to the parents that their children are being well taken cared of while they are in their classes. Seeing the smiles on the parents faces while watching their children perform in the talent show is priceless. This is definitely a highlight of my experience here at SON Ministries.
